An integrated cage increases control even when un-clipped, and retention claws ensure smooth clip in and out.

The PD-M8120 is specifically engineered to enhance bike control. The large contact surface area between the pedal and shoe provides a stable platform when climbing and descending. The lower platform height promotes pedaling stability and efficient power transfer. The integrated cage increases your control when you’re not clipped in.

Don't really notice the cage
Shimano SPD pedals are the gold standard for mountain biking. Took a gamble and went with the M8120 rather than my usual M8100 for my e-bike. The only difference is the extra cage of metal around the front and back of the pedal. Can't say I really notice it having any effect, good or bad, other than adding a few grams of weight. Still a great pedal.

Mine came with the adjustment mostly tight, so be sure to loosen the adjustment then work your way up. Don't be like me and do it backwards and end up on the ground with my foot still locked in. I liked this so much, I bought a pair for my Cyclocross bike too.
