- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2024Color: 36V Twist KitVerified PurchaseI put the kit on my Mongoose mountain bike which my Grandma gave me for my birthday years ago. It breathed a lot of new life into that old bike and wow what a rush! I went with 36 Volts and 450 Watts, which is considered pretty decent for a pedal-assist mode bike even these days. I can ride full throttle, in the top gear, and I can feel my legs still stoking the speed. This type of ebike conversion kit has the advantage of being independent from the regular drive train. So I can still use all the gears for climbing or cruising, and the motor can help in all situations. And one time when my pant leg was caught in the regular bike chain, the electric conversion kit allowed me to keep riding to a place where it was safe for me to stop and fix the problem. Likewise if the electric drive system ever failed for some reason (which it has NOT), you could still ride the bike with the pedals just as before and there is minimal additional friction.
The only challenging part of building the kit was adjusting the big triangular plate to match my XL frame geometry perfectly. I didn't have a vice, or a solid workbench, so I had to resort to propping it up on the curb and hitting it with a hammer. It probably would have been all right straight out of the box, but I wanted that plate to curve a bit more to snuggle up tight next to my rear triangle.
I took this bike after the conversion to Burning Man, and that was a great decision. The kit held up to all the extreme conditions like a champ. It made it possible to ride around all week without being completely exhausted and sore. Well yeah, I guess I was still fairly exhausted and sore, but just not as thoroughly thrashed as I might have been. I am sure I saw more art and had more fun because of this kit being on my bike.
It just makes sense to do an ebike conversion, since bikes are cheap, or you may already have one. And this kit is a fraction of the price of a new ebike. If you are on the fence about this purchase, reading my review, I would say definitely go for it. Just don't be afraid to ask for help if you have difficulty with any part of the installation. I watched a few youtube videos where they each have creative approaches to how to adapt the universal adapter to make it fit just right. If I wasn't able to do it with the hammer, I might have taken it to a shop to let them do it.
If you have the traditional, regular triangle shape there on the back of your bike, it should be pretty easy to bolt this on.
I am seriously considering purchasing the same ebike conversion kit again to put one on my riding partner's bike, since my overall experience with this item was fantastic.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2025Color: 36V Thumb KitVerified PurchaseI'm a full-time machinist and welder and I bought this kit as a starting place for converting my wife's vintage bicycle to electric. The basic kit would work to convert this bike to electric, but as with any on size fits all kit It did leave something to be desired. I used it primarily as a starting point for a motor, gearbox, gear ratios, controller etc. if you're a skilled fabricator, I suggest scrolling down and buying the pieces of this kit that you want, they are listed in the ad. If you're an ambitious DIY trying to save a buck on your conversion, this would work just fine for 90% of bicycles out there. My number one observation is that the sprocket that mounts to the wheel is rubber mounted and therefore cannot be perfectly aligned. But, you can get it. Pretty damn close and for the price point they did a nice job. The 450 w motor has nice acceleration and a brisk top speed. I highly recommend taking the cover off the gearbox, packing it with grease and sealing it with RTV. It takes a lot of the noise out of it. For those who are extremely mechanically inclined, note, you can use almost any ebike throttle if you swap out the hall effect sensor to a linear 49E hall effect sensor. I didn't like the one that came with this kit so I ordered a different one. Just to discover there is virtually no standardization in e-bikes.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2025Color: 36V Thumb KitVerified PurchaseI've had fun both putting this together and riding it around.
I mounted this onto a 26 inch Huffy 10 speed mountain bike. The motor bracket is not compatible with the frame of the bicycle. If it were wider and had an adjustable slot instead of holes on the top end I think it would fit better. But it is not a problem with a trip to the hardware store. Buy a small pack of bolts, a flat bracket, and with some drilling, an extension bracket is complete. Everything else mounted fine. Got a battery, some pipe hangers to mount it, an enclosure for the electronics, and a typical bike speedometer. All cost about $400, including the used bike from Goodwill. I'm pleased with the quality of the components overall, despite the motor mounting bracket compatibility. Be careful on what battery you go with. I'm not confident with most of the brands out on the market. Mine has been ok, but the item page disappeared from Amazon.
The 450W unit runs at 18 to 22 MPH maximum, depending on what conditions you're facing. The fastest I can get it with motor and pedaling has been 24 MPH. Motor has enough torque I don't need to pedal to get started or at all unless I feel like it. Terrain hasn't been a problem. I tend to leave the bike in high gear at all times, occasionally shifting the front derailleur up and down. The throttle thumb switch feels uncomfortable on the first long trip but you get used to it. Noise level is not bad. Other people will be able to hear you coming and going, but it isn't going to be heard indoors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good basic kit for the price
Color: 36V Thumb KitVerified PurchaseThis is a good kit for getting started with e-bikes, but you will need some DIY experience and suitable tools. I had to fit the motor in the vertical position as the heels of my shoes kept hitting the motor in the horizontal position when pedalling, so the motor bracket lugs needed bending slightly to align correctly with my bike frame. This is quite important because if the motor sprocket is too far out of alignment with the rear wheel sprocket, then the chain will ride up onto the sprocket teeth and snap.
Fitting the rear wheel sprocket was complicated by the fact that the 9 bolts are made of soft metal, and the nuts have sharp metal tangs which chew up the threads if you need to undo the bolts again when centralizing the sprocket. Best to replace these with hardened bolts and nylon locking nuts. The supplied sprocket had 32 teeth, but I sourced a 36T sprocket as I wanted more torque for hill climbing-the supplied chain was just long enough to allow this.
The rest of the kit was straightforward to fit and I lubricated the chain & sprockets with moly grease before testing with a freshly-charged 36v 12Ah Li-Ion battery pack. The motor is strong and initial acceleration is good-although the motor does whine a bit due to the straight-cut gears in the gearbox.
The first long trip on the road was successful. Riding along the promenade by the sea into a headwind did not strain the motor, and the bike topped out at around 18mph with the 36T rear sprocket. It should reach around 20mph with the standard 32T sprocket supplied with the kit-but I wanted stronger acceleration for hills at the expense of a bit of speed on the level.
A real test came when climbing a short but steep hill-around a 33% gradient. The combined weight of me, the bike & motor/battery plus some heavy shopping was around 150kg. With such a heavy load and a steep gradient, the speed dropped rapidly to around 5mph & I needed to use the pedals as well. The motor was fine and only slightly warm-it was the battery pack voltage falling under the very heavy load as the green LED on the thumb throttle extinguished-a bigger pack should cure the problem.
Overall, this is a good kit for the money and a good start to e-bikes.

5.0 out of 5 stars best value starter kit for DIY ebike enthusiasts
Color: 36V Thumb KitVerified PurchaseThis is a very decent starter kit for DIY people that has efficacy comparable to buying an e-bike that is several times the cost of this reasonably-priced kit, including the cost of a battery, horn/light accessory, and a cheap mountain bike. There are a couple of potential issues to be aware of: the motor mount bracket may need to be adjusted to fit on the bike, it does not fit all models. Under heavy usage, the fuse burns out, the connectors may melt, and the speed controller may also burn out. All of these are easy to correct, by upgrading the speed controller to 750W for example to handle heavy temporary currents during starts or up small hills, eliminating excess wiring and plastic connectors by making direct butt splices, and putting a 20A fuse. These upgrades make the motor the weak point in the kit, which I am fine with. The only other thing that might be nice for the straight flat stretches would be a sprocket with a few more teeth on the motor, so that it could actually propel the bike to the maximum legal speed for ebikes in my area, which is 32 km/h. It is possible the speed controller could be modified to allow this slightly faster motor operation, in lieu of changing the sprocket, but I have not tried that yet.
