Park Tool Bicycle Frame Thread Taps

Frame Taps will become a lifesaver at some time for virtually every mechanic. As with all Park Tool Taps, these are made of precision ground high carbon steel. Park Tool Frame Taps cut easily and fit conventional tap handles.

  • TAP-7: M3 x 0.5 for use with rear wheel drop-out alignment screws
  • TAP-8: M5 x 0.8 for use with common frame fittings such as water bottle mounts, toe clip, fender and rack bosses
  • TAP-9: M6 x 1 for cantilever brakes and large fender bosses
  • TAP-10: M10 x 1 thread for derailleur hangers

    My wife got her rear derailleur caught on a stick and jammed, so I needed to clean out and re-tap her derailleur hanger. (and bend it back as well) I did not have a 10 x 1 mm tap so I ordered this little baby, and when it came, I tapped the hanger nice and slow with my Gearwrench ratcheting tap handle. I then straightened the hanger back out with my Park Tool DAG 2.2 and reinstalled her rear derailleur. It took all of ten minutes and the bike was back in new shape.

    I can say that these Park Tool taps are well made out of hardened carbon steel and extremely sharp. My guess is that they would measure about 66 on the Rockwell Hardness measure test. They cut excellent threads and work as they should. Just make sure if you start to tap something that you use a bit of tap oil or 10 weight motor oil on the end of the tap. Make 1/2 turn clockwise then reverse and go counter clockwise. This prevents the tap (which is brittle) from breaking and helps to clear the newly cut threads of metal chips. The number one reason that taps break is use by owners who believe you just keep tightening the tap to cut a thread. Nothing could be more wrong.

    As to this Park Tool tap, it is five stars.
