I just bought this; haven't needed to use it yet on the road/trail. First things first: as of April 2015 the Y-12 and Y-16 have their photos reversed on Amazon. Everything else (specs, title, price) are accurate. I ordered the Y-16 (even though it had the Y-12 photo) and got the Y-16. So basically ignore the photo for ordering! (Go to crankbrothers.com for full photos of each.)

My first instinct when opening was the weight. It's a little heavy...or so it seemed. Just for kicks, I pulled out the scale. It weighed 257 g and is labeled at 260 g, so a little lighter than listed. But I weighed my little saddle bag that has a standard (Lezyne) multi tool, tube, little patch kit, two CO2 cartridges, cartridge inflator and in came in 15 g LESS than the Y-16 and a tube, patch kit, 2 CO2 cartridges. So in other words, overall this is a little bit heavier, even though there's no saddle bag since the stuff would go in your pockets. This is due to the black plastic frame of the tool and the little compartments, plus the heavier Y-tools. Those weight penalties are more than the saddle bag. But only a little, so I like it! I'd rather add a teeny bit more weight to be able to use real Y-tools instead of a little standard multi tool!

I used the Y- hex wrenches at home as a test. No problems there. The steel quality isn't top-notch, but this isn't for everyday use. It'll last a lifetime for saddle height changes, etc. every couple months - which is the intended use for a pocket tool. The little bits that fit in the container are great; held in by magnet on the Y-tool. My only long term concern is here: those bits are held into that container by foam so they don't rattle. By taking that foam out to access the bits regularly, perhaps the foam will no longer stay in place? Time will tell. But this will not only lead to rattling, which would drive me crazy, but also possibly to the bits falling out. I don't anticipate that problem, but I see it as a possibility over the course of a year or two of use.

Again, I haven't had to use it in a real situation yet. But as long as the inflator works, it'll be worth the 5 stars I'm giving it. (The chain breaker seems slightly poor quality, the pin in particular. But as long as it works once or twice in emergencies, that's all that matters...and I hopefully will never have to find out!) I like the shape; it fits in a jersey pocket easily. Plus the ingenuity makes it a fun tool!

Good idea but rather large and heavy. Chain tool on the road? I never in my 40 years of riding needed a chain tool out on the ride.

Crank Brothers has won a customer for life. This tool is not only super easy to use and small enough to carry around, but its so well made that i even use it for in home repairs. The tool has some weight to it which feels great to hold and has saved me several times from getting stranded. If you are looking for a tool to always carry with you or even just to have around the house, this is a very good choice.

As others have said, cheap case! Also missing some essential tools, of course you don't realize it until you need it. Big and bulky, doesn't fit into a seat bag and takes over an entire jersey pocket. Seems to be more of a design experiment. Always a real PITA to take out the tools to find the one you need.

Everything you could ever want to do repairs on the trail to keep you going, set up in a handy, easy to use pack. The problem with most multi-tools is that they are so compact and small, when you do need to use them, they are nearly so impossible to use that unless you are miles from help it is almost more worth it to just call your wife and have her come pick you up.

I always ride with my camelbak, and the Y tool fits easily in my pack. All I take is my Y tool, a spare tube, and a couple of C02 cartridges. I am good to go. No matter what.

    ULTRA HEAVY!

This is a well made tool with elegant design. It's a bit on the heavy side to stick in a jersey pocket. I carry one in the luggage bag of my commuter bike and also in my Camelback on my mountain bike.
The only reservation I have, and the reason I give 4 stars instead of 5, is that the small driver parts would be really easy to lose on the trail.
I don't know whether the chain tool will work on an 11 speed chain. I'm told that they "probably" will and I don't like "probably" but I haven't found a good multi-tool that claims to have an 11 speed chain tool so I can't really complain much about this one.

This is an interesting tool--one that's nicer to look at than it is to actually use. It's clearly meant to be portable, but it's awkwardly sized and takes up a lot of space for what it packs. Just look at the thing. Not an efficient use of space. Plus, when you pull out one of the triple tools in the middle, the other, which was magnetically attached, falls out, so one piece turns into three. Awkward. So how about in the shop? I'd still rather use larger hex keys with more comfortable handles. I burned a CO2 cartridge trialing the inflator. It works, but it's hard to modulate flow with. I've gone back to a smaller multi-tool and a Shiny Object inflator. That combo is lighter, takes up less space, and is easier to use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bello ma poco funzionale.
Reviewed in Italy on October 12, 2016

This is a sturdy multi-tool and nicely designed. I find the tr-star design a useful one when bike fixing. I bought this to replace and Ice-Toolz one that cracked, and so fr this has been very useful and proves to be well made

3.0 out of 5 stars Bon outil, un peu encombrant
Reviewed in France on November 17, 2016
